Learn Development at Frontend Masters. We often want the elements to butt up against each other. In the case of navigation, that means it avoids the awkward little unclickable gaps. You want spaces between words that you type to be spaces right? The spaces between these blocks are just like spaces between words. The reason you get the spaces is because, well, you have spaces between the elements a line break and a few tabs counts as a space, just to be clear.
Minimized HTML will solve this problem, or one of these tricks:. You can scoot the elements back into place with negative 4px of margin may need to be adjusted based on font size of parent. That allows you to set their width and height and padding and stuff. If the browser support is acceptable to you and what you need out of inline-block is centering, you could use flexbox. Frontend Masters is the best place to get it. I always use the negative margin method, but the floating method, simple as it is, will be of great help to me.
Landis and Julian: You guys may want to reconsider the negative margin technique. Using left: -5px; might be a good idea, but of course that brings all kinds of scary risks with it. Leaving off closing tags is like running across the beach naked. The horra! I use the negative margin too. I too have always used the negative margin method, I might start using the font-size technique however — just seems too simple to give it a miss. All of the other techniques either toy with the underlying code or create an association that I or another developer using my code would need to be mindful of.
Also, you have to clear them. This bugs in Firefox in floats, so better separate letter-spacing to Webkit-only browsers. Just saying… I have used the YUI grid system for over a year now and have had no problems. I have tested about every grid system out there, and the YUI one takes the cup for being both light weight, bullet proof, and responsive with modification. Sreejesh KV, such a sollution is definitely better than a negative margin : Especially when the elements need to be alined left where the negative-margin method would shift the first list item too.
The way I used to handle it is not to apply the shift for the first element via the :first-child selector. Floating, suggested by many people here, makes the elements block-level, they are not inline-blocks anymore then. If its a Nav, just float the darn things. So what it comes down to, as Chris said, is the space between elements. My findings led me to what Geert De Deckere posted as the best way to solve the problem. Negative margin breaks here Firefox 13 on linux Still one pixel of whitespace is between the elements.
Using an em value seems to works across systems, though I forget the exact value right now…. Awesome article. Not to mention, i will have a back link to this post ; awesome stuff. Thanks for your explanation. I do float the elements, it works, but other solutions mentioned in this article sounds great, too.
Fighting the Space Between Inline Block Elements
I use float instead of inline-block, and for exactly the same reasons as Daniel and ian do. Why make things more complicated than they need to be? It might not be as semantic technically, but it suits my thinking style. I have had great success in the past with the font-size: 0; on the parent ul and the proper font size set on the li.
I only use this when the list items need to be centered though.I have tried all kinds of things and copied css from resolved topics on several sites, and nothing seems to work. Why is it there? The page I need help with: [ log in to see the link]. Ah, the screenshot helped. You can adjust the padding to your preference.
For the content area, this might be a bit trickier, but the theme scripts adds a dynamic top margin to it, so we have to force a new margin with:. I am pretty much lost here. I have checked out the other postings about the issue, but I'm not getting close to solve the problem. Go to your main CSS stylesheet and look at the selector for " wrapper". If it doesn't already contain "clear: both;" inside of it, add that property. That will clear the floats and should remedy that whitespace at the top of the screen.
I had the same problem and this actually solved my problem. But, can you explain how does this clear:both; work? Thanks for the help. Unfortunatley it won't work, I have tried your suggestion but nothing happens. The white space remain on top of the page.
So the titel is blocking for the header to adjust to the page? But if I want to keep the titel what can I do to make it work? Or is this option not possible?
I solved it So the problem is fixed. Thank you Markus, your solution of "clear: both" for the wrapper worked for me too. It is strange that one would need this though as this solution is not mentioned at all in any of the videos of this course so far Also, I really don't understand why clearing the wrapper would solve anything since the wrapper is not linked to the header In other words your solution appears like magic to me: I have no idea why it worked Your solution appears more structural so more powerful but my solution seems also to work I guess and at least I understand why I don't really know which one is better and which I should therefore use Any opinions?

See the example below or follow along at home with the demo. Notice in HTML code example at the top of this article, there are actually two line breaks, one before the line of text and one after, which allow the text to be on its own line in the code.
When the text renders in the browser, those line breaks appear as if they are stripped out. Also stripped out are the extra spaces on the line before the first letter. If we want to force the browser to display those line breaks and extra white space characters we can use white-space: pre. White space is honored exactly as it is in the HTML and the text does not wrap until a line break is present in the code. This is particularly useful when literally displaying code, which benefits aesthetically from some formatting and some time is absolutely crucial, as in white space dependent languages!
Perhaps you like how pre honors white space and breaks, but you need the text to wrap instead of potentially break out of its parent container.Numerical integration in arbitrary-precision ball arithmetic
Finally, white-space: pre-line; will break lines where they break in code, but extra white space is still stripped. Interestingly, the final line break is not honored.WordPress Spacing Explained - Padding/Margin/Border Usage In Elements

Chris, you seem to be having a clipping issue with the IE image sprite. What if you have an element of a specific width and it contains one word that is wider than the box? Is there a way — other than adding some js — to wrap the word to fit in the box with a hyphen? And maybe some browser compatibility tests if you have time?
Chris and all! I switched to following doctype hoping that was the issue. But pre-wrap works find in other browsers. One important thing. W3C validator is marking white-space: nowrap; as non-existing in CSS3, and reporting it as an error.

Is there an easy fix to that? Here's how to do it if you need to in future. This will resolve this particular issue but you may encounter it for other tags such as p as you add them. For any future issues you find, I would recommend using the browser developer tools usually found by clicking F12 in the browser or right clicking on an element and choosing 'Inspect Element' to inspect the elements and check the box models.

I'm including both the CSS and a screen shot to be clear. If one of the elements mentioned in your question is a block-element, you can change its height: 0px.
If you don't get it to work, or it isn't enough, you have to add a negative margin-top to the content element. SharePoint puts padding around a bunch of stuff, I found if I do the following CSS it eliminates most of the troublesome space.
